If you’re a current customer or you’ve worked with Hastreiter Industries in the past, one thing you’re likely aware of by now is we never stop looking for ways to be the best at what we do. Continuous growth, improvement and education are foundational to our success.
Reading our original blog post below (from 2017) you can see how excited we were to announce our machine shop’s ITAR registration.
We value our ITAR registration more than ever today as: 1. It’s helped make our company stronger and: 2. It lets our customers and prospective customers know that we’re serious about quality and ongoing improvements at Hastreiter.
Following our model of continuous improvement, we’re going to take the liberty of improving on this old blog post and address some of they key reasons companies choose to work with ITAR registered machine shops versus those that aren’t.
But first, let’s answer this question…
What is ITAR?
Sure, defense machine shops, military machine shops, or any company that provides military machining services is most likely ITAR certified. It’s a prerequesite to be able to provide defense machining services.

So what is ITAR?
ITAR stands for “International Traffic in Arms Regulations.” It is a set of United States government regulations that control the export and import of defense-related articles, services, and technical data. The U.S. Department of State administers ITAR, primarily through its Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).
Companies and individuals engaged in the manufacture, sale, or export of defense-related articles and services must comply with ITAR regulations. ITAR compliance involves stringent record-keeping, reporting, and licensing requirements, and it requires ensuring that controlled items and information are only accessed by authorized parties within the U.S. or approved foreign entities.
ITAR is especially important in industries such as aerospace, defense, and advanced technology, where the sharing of sensitive technical data and military-grade equipment is common. Compliance with ITAR is essential for businesses to avoid legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage, and to maintain the security and integrity of defense-related projects and technologies.
Why Work With an ITAR Registered CNC Machine Shop?
It’s no secret that the ITAR badge brings credibility to any machine shop who has made the commitment to become ITAR registered and ITAR compliant. Aside from credibility ITAR brings to our CNC machine shop, there are multiple reasons companies from all industries choose to work with ITAR registered CNC machine shops across the USA.
Here are a few:
Quality and Reliability
ITAR registration implies that the machine shop adheres to stringent standards and best practices in manufacturing defense-related components.
This commitment to quality, precision, and adherence to industry standards ensures that the produced parts meet or exceed the strict requirements of aerospace and defense applications.
Because of this, it’s not uncommon for companies looking for a military machine shop, or a defense machine shop to seek out ITAR certified machine shops.
Compliance and Legal Obligations
Working with an ITAR registered machine shop ensures compliance with the stringent regulations governing the export and import of defense-related articles and technical data.
It helps companies avoid legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage that may result from non-compliance with ITAR requirements.
Protection of Sensitive Information
Security is more of a concern than ever. If you’re researching CNC machine shops, those that are ITAR registered signifies that the machine shop has established strong security measures such as NIST 800-171 (nist.gov) to safeguard your sensitive technical data and proprietary information.
This ensures that your critical information remains confidential and protected from unauthorized access.
Access to Defense Projects and Contracts
ITAR registration is often a prerequisite for bidding on and participating in government contracts, defense-related projects, and collaborations with aerospace and defense companies.
For us at Hastreiter, being an ITAR registered machine shop opens doors to serving our country, the defense industry and gives us the opportunity to work with companies who would otherwise have to look elsewhere for machining services.
Summary
Whether you’re looking for a military machine shop, a defense machine shop, an ITAR certified machine shop, by collaborating with an ITAR compliant machine shop, you’ll benefit from peace of mind. provides peace of mind, as it mitigates the potential legal and financial consequences associated with non-compliance, while upholding the industry’s high standards for quality, security, and professionalism.

ITAR REGISTERED
Hastreiter Industries is excited to announce that we are now ITAR (International Traffic of Arms Regulations) registered. The necessity came from a company we started working with in April of 2017. As a tier 1 defense contractor, approximately one third of their work is listed on the United States Munitions List for the exporting of defense related articles and thus subject to the regulations of ITAR. The company was experiencing extreme growth. Recently even their office employees started working until midnight. While the company works with many machine shops on a daily basis, they struggled to get enough ITAR registered, high quality manufacturers to supply their need. In an internal meeting to address the hole in their supply chain, Hastreiter’s name was specifically brought up.
The company called Hastreiter Industries, explained their need and asked if Hastreiter would be willing to become ITAR registered and implement the necessary processes and procedures to be an ITAR compliant machine shop. As a contract manufacturer, Hastreiter’s goal for our customers/partners is simple: make their job easier and business flow smoother. We believe a purchaser shouldn’t have to worry about their suppliers, but instead come to expect solutions to the challenges that face their business. For that reason, it was an absolute yes that Hastreiter Industries would continue to grow with the needs of our partner. Besides changing our Quality Management System for ITAR compliance, increasing security and additional CNC mills have been purchased to continue to meet the demands of our growing customer.
CONTINUING TO SERVE THE DEFENSE INDUSTRY
While becoming ITAR registered has led to a significant leap in the amount of defense related work Hastreiter Industries produces, this industry is not new to us. While NDAs prevent examples, Hastreiter Industries (under the company’s former name, UTM Inc.) is certified by the United States (U.S.)/Canada Joint Certification Program (known as JCP or DD Form 2345) that enables Hastreiter Industries, “to obtain access to unclassified technical data disclosing militarily critical technology with military or space application that is under the control of, or in the possession of the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) or the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND).” source
We’re excited to continue serving this critical industry in a growing capacity and are thankful for the opportunities that we have to serve both our country and our country’s allies through manufacturing components that are reliable in the field. If you’re looking for a defense supplier, check out our capabilities or have us take a look at your project.
